What Does Locations Do?

Locations is a network aware location manager. That's a fancy way of saying that it's a piece of software that watches which network you're on and changes your settings appropriately.

Though I'd love to do this with magic, it still requires some initial setup. For every different location, you create a list of actions to run from the Locations System Preference pane. These actions can be anything from setting up your Apple Mail SMTP servers to changing your desktop background.

Just in case you want to do something I haven't thought of, you can also run applescripts, automator workflows, and terminal commands.

What Actions Are Available?

You can:

  • Change your Adium Status
  • Change the Apple Mail Fetch Rate
  • Change your Apple Mail SMTP Servers
  • Change your Desktop Image
  • Change your Network Location
  • Change your Default Printer
  • Change your Screensaver Settings
  • Change your System Volume
  • Change your iChat Status
  • Change the Screen Brightness
  • Change the Timezone
  • Check for New Podcasts in iTunes
  • Open an Application
  • Close an Application
  • Connect to a Network Server
  • Enable or Disable Airport
  • Enable or Disable Bluetooth
  • Lock your Keychain
  • Open a URL
  • Play an iTunes Playlist
  • Require a Password on Waking from Sleep
  • Run an Applescript
  • Run an Automator Workflow
  • Run a Terminal Command
  • Start a Time Machine Backup

Do I Have to Have the Locations Menu in my Menu Bar?

No. In the Locations Preference pane, click the 'Enable Locations' button to turn off Locations. Now, hold down the 'Control' key on your keyboard and click the 'Enable Locations' button again. Locations will be running, but there will be no menu bar icon.

How Do I Trigger a Location with Any Unknown Network?

Go to the 'Triggers' tab of the Location that you'd like to edit, and right click on the triggers table. You'll see a menu pop up. Choose the 'Trigger this location with any unknown network' option.

Can I Request a New Action?

You can request a new action by emailing locations-support@codehackers.net

All feature requests are considered on an individual basis, depending on popularity and utility. A very useful feature for everyone is more likely to be implemented than something that is very specific to you.

How Do I Purchase Locations?

You can buy Locations for $19 dollars with a credit card or a Paypal account.

Who Do I Email For Help?

You can get email support for Locations from locations-support@codehackers.net

I'm currently a full time student and the sole developer of Locations, so even though I try to check the support mail everyday, an in-depth response to an issue may take a week or more depending on the severity of the issue.

How Can I Uninstall Locations?

Open the Locations preference pane and uncheck 'Enable Locations'. That just shuts down the program that does the actual switching in the background.

Next, go to your home directory, then the "Library" folder and in that the "Preference Panes" folder. Trash "Locations 2.0". Restart System Preferences if you haven't closed it already.

Locations should be completely off your system.
